In the last couple of centuries there have been a number of licenced premises in and around the village. The earliest, the Five Bells, held a licence from 1767. It is now a private house, having been for some years the village shop, situated in the centre of Shirenewton. The Tan House is said to be so named because in 1715 a tanner by the name of G. Thomas lived there. It's a traditional village pub open and serving food all day and every day. Live entertainment on a regular basis. Regular beers: Hancock's, Bass The Tan House, Shirenewton, Chepstow, Monmouthshire, NP16 6AQ Shirenewton (01291) 641274 The Kings Head (1822), reputed to have been a coaching inn, is now The Old Rectory on the Crick road. The Engineer's Arms (1861 - 1876) is now also a private house, as is Upper House (1847), which is adjacent to the recreation centre. The Butchers Arms (1851 - 1876) has now disappeared. The Tredegar Arms (1861) in the centre of the village is still licenced. It's a popular local bistro but you are welcome just for pint.
