Shirenewton Primary SchoolShirenewton School is a modern school built in 1985. It is situated in a delightful rural setting in South East Wales in the county of Monmouthshire. It lies between the villages of Mynyddbach and Shirenewton with a view of the Old Severn Bridge. It is very well described in their dedicated web site The school has eight single aged classes; four are infant classes and four are junior classes. Two nursery nurses are employed to work with children with special needs. All classrooms are light and airy and there are libraries in both the infant and junior departments. These are well stocked with an extensive collection of fiction and reference books. Each classroom has its own computer and a range of appropriate software. There is also a computer in the junior library which has a Library Cataloguing System, so pupils learn how to find reference materials for themselves. Two computers are linked to the Internet. The school has its own sports field in the grounds as well as two playgrounds and other grassed areas for playing and environmental activities. The school has a variety of musical instruments available for children who wish to learn music. The staff are backed up by visiting instrumental teachers. All children are taught the core subjects of the National Curriculum. This has set programmes of study and testing arrangements. The teachers are dedicated and create learning opportunities within these guidelines. The school also provides a wide range of extra-curricular activities including Art, Recorders, Gymnastics, Netball, Safe Cycling, Chess, French, Football, Rugby and Country Dancing. The school has a very active Parent-Teacher Association. Typical PTA activities include treasure hunts, school fêtes, car boot sales, barn dances and barbecues. We believe that a good partnership between home and school is essential. There is a positive effect on children's development when parents and school work closely together. Your child's progress can be directly related to the quality and strength of this partnership. Parents are regularly invited to come and celebrate their child's talents and success. Events include the Harvest Festival, Christmas concerts, class assemblies and Sports Day.
